Supporting Sleep Testing for U.S. Personnel in Europe
At ESD Health, Effortless Sleep Diagnostics, we’re excited to announce the opening of our virtual sleep clinic in Europe! This service is designed to better support American service members stationed overseas and U.S.-certificated pilots who need diagnostic sleep studies and documentation for FAA medical evaluation or VA-related purposes.
Before arranging a study, contact our team to confirm availability at your location and discuss any instructions from your physician, Aviation Medical Examiner (AME), or VA provider.
A Better Option for U.S. Service Members
Arranging a sleep study while stationed overseas can involve additional logistics. Our virtual clinic aims to make at-home testing more accessible for service members who need evaluation for conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
For VA disability claims involving sleep apnea, the VA’s Sleep Apnea Disability Benefits Questionnaire requires a diagnosis confirmed by a sleep study. The report can support the medical evidence in a claim, but the VA may request additional information or an examination. [1]
A sleep apnea diagnosis alone does not establish that the condition is service-connected or guarantee disability benefits. Eligibility depends on the applicable VA requirements and the evidence in the individual case. [2]
Discuss the purpose of your testing with your provider before ordering so you understand which records are needed.
Simplified Sleep Studies for U.S.-Licensed Pilots Living in Europe
Our European clinic is designed to help U.S.-licensed pilots living overseas arrange sleep testing that supports their FAA medical evaluation.
When a sleep study is necessary, FAA guidance specifies a Type I laboratory study or a Type II seven-channel home study providing comparable data and standards. The study must be interpreted by a sleep medicine specialist and include a diagnosis and any treatment recommendations. A limited Type III exception applies where Type II testing is unavailable. [3]
Completing a study is one part of the process. Your AME can help you understand the documentation and next steps for your individual case. Learn more about at-home sleep testing for pilots and FAA documentation.
Why Choose ESD Health’s Virtual Clinic?
Convenience: Complete the overnight recording at home when home testing is clinically appropriate and service is available at your location.
Documentation planning: Share your FAA correspondence or VA-related testing instructions before arranging the study so the required documentation can be discussed.
Clinical interpretation: For FAA assessment purposes, the study must include interpretation by a sleep medicine specialist. [3]
A clear process: Confirm kit delivery and return arrangements, setup instructions, and expected report timing with our team before scheduling.
Our guide to preparing for an at-home sleep study can help you understand what to expect on test night.
